Meet Mrs. Deanna Mullen

We asked our teachers & staff a few questions so that you can get to know them better!

What is your role at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic School?
7th & 8th Grade Science Teacher

What year did you start working at St. Stephen?
2017

Tell us about your education background & about your teaching/work experience.
I earned my education degree from Arkansas State University in 2005 with a focus on 4-8th grade math and science. After earning a business degree from Wayne State College after high school, I had a bit of a career change and decided to try a teaching career. I was able to start teaching at the school where I interned. It was one of the best decisions I have made. I love teaching. As my husband was transferred to different Air Force bases, I taught at Cabot South Middle School in Cabot, AR. Then we moved to Wichita Falls, TX and I worked at Scotland Park Elementary. From there we traveled to Wichita, KS and I taught at Wineteer Elementary. After my husband’s retirement, we moved back to Omaha and I taught at Wilson Focus before coming to St. Stephen. I love St. Stephen’s and feel at home here.

What do you love about your job?
Working with the students and getting to know them. I love that Jesus and their faith is a big part of their lives.

Who is your favorite Saint or what is your favorite scripture?
The statute of Mary near the Giving Garden.

Tell us about your family (spouse, children, grandchildren, pets, etc.):
My husband is Brian Mullen. He retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant which is the highest rank you can earn as an enlisted airman. I am very proud of him. We have one son, Patrick. Patrick lives in Omaha and I’m proud of him as well.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to work in the business field and I did so for about 17 years. When my son, Patrick, was attending elementary school, I volunteered quite a bit at his school. This inspired me to earn my education degree.

What is your favorite sweet treat?
Dairy Queen chocolate sundae

Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?
I like to read. I like dogs. I like crafting. I visit my dad whenever I can.

What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekends?
I have two sisters in Omaha and we like to do fun things around Omaha and visit our Dad.

What piece of advice would you give parents to help their child(ren) succeed at St. Stephen?
Check with your children about what they are learning. We are beginning Amplify Science this year so they will be learning and discovering Earth and Physical Science with the digital format of Amplify Science.
