Meet Dr. MaryRose Mickens
We asked our teachers & staff a few questions so that you can get to know them better!
What is your role at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic School?
1st Grade Teacher
What year did you start working at St. Stephen?
I started working at St. Stephen’s in 2026
Tell us about your experience in education:
My journey in education began at Creighton University’s Child Development Center, where I worked as a floater teacher for three years while earning my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, I taught Pre-K for three years before spending four years in Kindergarten. I am now excited to be teaching 1st grade at St. Stephen’s!
I also hold a Master’s degree in Educational Administration, earned an ELL Fellowship through the University of Notre Dame’s ACE program, and completed my Doctorate in Education & Leadership. My doctoral research focused on supporting language development and social-emotional well-being in early childhood English language learners.
What do you love most about the St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic School community?
So far, it seems very welcoming, close-knit, and family-oriented! When I toured the school with Julie after my interview, I met a few staff members, and everyone seemed so friendly and inviting. I am so excited to meet everyone and become integrated into this wonderful community!
What piece of advice would you give parents to help their child(ren) succeed at St. Stephen?
Partner with your child’s teacher, encourage a love of learning at home, and celebrate progress—big and small. When children feel supported both at school and at home, their confidence grows, and they are empowered to reach their full potential.
What, in your experience, is the best part about teaching at a Catholic school?
The best part about teaching at a Catholic school is being able to nurture both my students’ academic growth and their faith. I love that we can openly talk about God and Jesus, pray together, and have meaningful conversations about our faith—even with our youngest learners. Watching students grow in kindness, compassion, and their relationship with God is just as rewarding as watching them grow academically.
Tell us about your family:
My husband, Devonte, and I have been together for several years (we just married last year) and have recently begun our greatest adventure yet—becoming parents to our son, Isaiah. Parenthood has been the greatest blessing, and we have loved every moment of watching him grow and experience the world so far. We also have three dogs: Milo, Kirby, and Ozzie—who have fully embraced their roles as Isaiah’s loyal “guard dogs,” even though they’re all under 20 pounds!
Devonte serves in the U.S. Air Force at Offutt Air Force Base. Although we met in Omaha, he is originally from South Carolina, so we love making trips there throughout the year to spend time with his family. Whether we’re traveling, taking long walks, working out together, or simply enjoying quality time with our family and friends, we love making memories together. Family, faith, and staying active are a big part of who we are, and I am so thankful for the love and support they bring to my life every day.
